Destiny 2 first launched on September 6, 2017, under publisher Activision. The multiplayer first-person shooter faced a lot of criticism during the first year of support, but Bungie would turn the overall perception around with the launch of Destiny 2: Forsaken in 2018. Destiny 2: Forsaken was one of the game’s most critically acclaimed expansions and introduced seasonal content. Following the expansion’s major success, Bungie would build anticipation for Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, announce a split from Activision publishing in 2019, and bring the title to the popular Steam platform. The game’s player-base would continue to flourish through expansions Destiny 2: Beyond Light and Destiny 2: The Witch Queen alongside a wealth of updates and seasonal content. The next expansion, Destiny 2: Lightfall, arrives in 2023.

Through the official Bungie Twitter account, the company announced Destiny 2 and other major games would remain multiplatform following the Sony buyout. Bungie quickly dispelled worries about Destiny 2’s future, and the company said “our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.” Additionally, Bungie will continue to independently publish and develop games such as Destiny 2. The company wants to “drive one, unified Bungie community” with support from Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Bungie reiterates its positive stance on multiplatform releases, and the buyout by Sony incentivizes Bungie to expand its ranks with the hiring of more talented developers. After the acquisition was completed, Bungie said “the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration in hiring talent across the entire studio to support our ambitious vision.” The company is currently hiring across all disciplines for Destiny 2 and future titles on the horizon.

Bungie’s current status as a studio is encouraging for many players of Destiny 2. The popular online title will receive new expansions, updates, and content in the years to come across all supported platforms. Bungie is now supported by Sony while maintaining creative freedom, allowing the company to develop the content its best known for. Additionally, the buyout allows Bungie to grow its development capabilities as it explores new projects in the future.

The buyout appears to have no drawbacks for Bungie as a whole at this point. However, Sony is expected to make more acquisitions in the coming years as the company explores live-service games and PC ports. Future acquisitions could see studios create exclusive content under the PlayStation Studios umbrella.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
